Online Crone Art Therapy Group and The Wisdom of the Crone

In ancient times, the term “Crone” was revered, symbolizing wisdom and respect. Derived from “crown,” it honored elder women for their knowledge and experience. Similarly, “hag” roots from “hagia,” as in Hagia Sophia, meaning divine wisdom. However, patriarchal societies twisted these terms to portray malevolent witches, aiming to silence and disempower older women to maintain male dominance. Despite these efforts, many cultures continue to honor their wise women, recognizing their invaluable contributions and insights.

Challenges Faced by Older Women

Women in their later years often encounter various difficulties within modern society. They are frequently ignored and undervalued, as cultural norms tend to emphasize youthful appearances – a standard not equally applied to men. As they navigate life changes such as children leaving home and transitioning into retirement, they experience significant shifts. Many older women feel invisible in a culture that celebrates youth, which is a superficial measure that overlooks the true depth of their lives. This societal pressure can adversely affect their physical and mental health, often leading to reduced self-esteem.

Loneliness is prevalent among mature women as social connections evolve and longstanding relationships may diminish. Isolation can be exacerbated by health issues that limit their ability to travel and engage in social activities. Mental health challenges akin to those faced by people of all ages, including stress, grief, anxiety, depression, trauma, and the need to process negative life experiences, are also common among older women. The online Crone Art Therapy Group aims to address these problems, providing a supportive community where their experiences and wisdom are acknowledged and celebrated.

Carl Jung and the Crone Archetype

The esteemed psychologist Carl Jung introduced the idea of archetypes—universal symbols and themes that reside within our collective unconscious and manifest in our dreams. Among these archetypes is the Crone, or Wise Mother, which is present in both men and women. Jung posited that this archetype embodies wisdom, guidance, and nurturing qualities, often represented in nature by elements like the moon and bodies of water.

The Crone archetype is characterized by wisdom, confidence, decisiveness, and courage—traits found in women who historically faced persecution for their strong convictions. These women no longer fit the submissive maiden archetype but instead embody powerful figures who do not tolerate foolishness. The online Crone Art Therapy Group in Guelph explores these archetypes, helping participants connect with their inner Wise Mother by reflecting on their life experiences, embracing the divine feminine, and expressing their creativity.
