About the Women's Self Care Art Therapy Group
Self care definitions can encompass both our physical and mental health. Art therapy in one creative soulful way to practice healthy self care and has deep roots in modern psychotherapy dating back to the ’50s. Many famous psychologists have stated that artmaking is an amazing way to express oneself and good for mental health and our souls. Carl Jung, Abraham Maslow, and Carl Rogers all promoted art-making in their writings, but the clever psychotherapist Margaret Naumberg was the grandmother of art therapy. Way to rock, Grandma Naumberg! Art Therapy is a type of therapy that uses creative artmaking as the tool for expression in therapy.Â
Art Therapy Guelph’s groups are geared towards mature adult women. They are held online using the zoom app. Each group has between 6 to 8 participants, so remember that these groups have limited space.
Each week there will be a self care topic. We will learn a topic about self care and then spend approximately 40 minutes creating art based on our learnings. Each person then will share their artwork by emailing it to the facilitator for them to share or holding it up to discuss what it means to them. Don’t worry you don’t have to be artistic to participate and no one judges the quality of your art.Â
Art Therapy Guelph groups are not open. That means all the people are the same for the four sessions, and people don’t start or stop at different times. Due to the nature of art therapy, these group sessions are limited in space, and clients who sign up commit to participating in all of the group sessions. This ensures group cohesion and commitment to therapy.
Please note: No refunds or makeup dates for missed group art therapy sessions. Participants must prepay and commit to all 4 sessions. If unable to attend all sessions, please wait to join when you can.
